How to submit a manuscript for our consideration.
We welcome proposals for monographs, edited volumes, and critical editions in our areas of interest. We are a small press, so we cannot accept every qualified proposal; but we read every submission carefully and we respond to every author who writes to us.
Our scope
We currently consider manuscripts in the following fields:
- Turkic and Central Asian history (any period from antiquity to the present)
- Religious studies: Islamic studies, Sufi thought, sociology of religion in Central Asia
- Classical Turkish literature, including critical editions of divan poetry and prose
- Linguistics of the Turkic languages
- Sociology, economics, political science, and area studies of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and the broader region
- Tourism studies and cultural geography of the region
- Critical reprints of significant works in the history of Russian and Central Asian Orientalism
We do not currently publish fiction, poetry collections, or general-interest non-academic works. If you are uncertain whether your project falls within our scope, write to us with a brief description before preparing a full proposal.
What to send
For an initial proposal, please send the following as PDF or Word attachments:
- A working title and a one-paragraph description of the manuscript
- A detailed synopsis (between 1,500 and 3,000 words) explaining the argument, the method, and the work's contribution to existing scholarship
- A chapter-by-chapter outline with brief descriptions
- One or two sample chapters in their current state
- Your current CV, including a list of relevant prior publications
- An estimate of the final length, in words and approximate pages
- For edited volumes: a list of confirmed contributors and their working titles
Languages
We accept manuscripts in Turkish, English, Russian, and Kyrgyz. Authors writing in their non-native language are encouraged to have their text reviewed by a competent reader before submission; we do copy-edit, but we cannot rewrite a manuscript that needs substantial language work.
Originality & prior publication
Manuscripts submitted to us must be the author's own original work and must not be under simultaneous consideration by another publisher. Where portions of the manuscript have appeared previously as journal articles, conference papers, or in another author's edited volume, the author must disclose this in the cover letter and obtain any necessary permissions before final acceptance.
What you can expect from us
- An acknowledgment of your submission within ten working days
- An initial editorial decision within six to twelve weeks
- If we send the manuscript out for external review: anonymized reports back to you, typically within four months
- If we accept the work: a contract specifying terms and a clear production schedule
- An ISBN, deposit-library distribution, and inclusion in our catalogue
What we do not do
- We do not charge submission fees, reading fees, or "publication contributions."
- We do not offer "expedited" or "fast-track" publication in exchange for a fee.
- We do not publish on a vanity-press model. If we accept a manuscript for publication, the editorial work is ours to do.
Please include "Manuscript Proposal" in the subject line, along with the working title of your project. The director and the relevant series editor will read your proposal and respond to you directly.
